In contimation of my Despatch No. 275 of the

11th instant, I have the honour to suggest that in the event

of Mr. Pilling not being passed as physically fit for service in this Colony an officer may be selected by you for the appoint- -ment referred to in my Despatch No. 228 of the 2nd ultimo if

you approve its institution.

The most important duties of the post are those numbered (5) and (6) in the enclosure to the latter despatch. An officer, therefore, having a good knowledge of accounts and having an aptitude for detail and accuracy in his work is re- -quired. Seeing that no officer in this Colony has any knowledge of the work in a Customs House, such knowledge would be of advantage in the candidate selected.

I should be glad if it could be arranged that the selected candidate should arrive here early next year, and it would be well if he could be appointed in the first instance on a three years' agreement, or, if transferred from another Colony, on a year's probation.

It has occurred to me that a suitable candidate might be found in the Colony of Fiji and I have asked the
